AM RING
Draft, Monument to Freedom and Unity, Leipzig / 2021
The design for the Leipzig Freedom and Unity Monument provides a living place for reflection on freedom and democracy and commemorates the peaceful revolution of 1989/90.
It consists of a large number of coloured glass steles that symbolise the diversity of people who stood up for freedom then and now. In the centre of the memorial, a square traces the outline of Leipzig's inner city ring road, where the Monday demonstrations took place in 1989.
An LED display shows alternating word combinations of the term freedom and an adjective and verb, which encourage reflection and emphasise that freedom is dynamic and must always be renegotiated. The memorial links the past with the present and invites visitors to linger, discuss and actively engage with the values of freedom and democracy. and democracy.
